Life In A Luxury Hotel

Life In A Luxury Hotel

I recently took a small vacation to Naples Florida with my husband back in January of this year. We stayed at the wonderful Ritz-Carlton Resort.
As soon you enter the lobby you could tell why this is a five-star resort

The interiors were pure luxury. The design of the hotel was not your typical Florida hotel design. They didn’t use what you would expect of pastel beach colors. The only flamingo pink I could found was in the gift shop.
The design of the hotel was more of my style of new traditional chic. Formal furniture that has clean lines, with comfort in mind, the use of luxury fabrics, and beautiful lighting. Always a little sparkle.
Want to be inspired to have luxury hotel interiors? Here is way to incorporate in your home.

Keep it simple don’t over clutter the room with furnishing and accessories.

As a designer, I recommend to achieve the new traditional style that the furniture is a classic silhouette with new details.

RC seating

For seating furniture, it’s about comfort and clean lines.

I will tell you that lighting is always importing. I love to add a little sparkle. With finishes and details for example, crystals in chandeliers, metal finishes, and glass bases or shades. The sparkle makes the room sings.

When it comes to window treatments new traditional style is not heavy drapery and eliminate swag valence. Keep it simple.

I love how they built a valence around the window treatment, so you cannot see the hardware.
This was one of the only Florida details that I could find in the resort with stationary shutters.

In the bath can we say marble. The marble has a glossy finish that adds a little sparkle. A glam mirror with backlighting will make anybody look gorgeous. If you have room to add a water closet for privacy, how luxurious is that?

Let’s talk about the bed, I think the biggest trend I’ve been seeing for the past five years is beautiful oversize upholster headboards. Wouldn’t you love to have breakfast in bed delivered to you this bed?

Luxury living doesn’t have to be an expensive hotel vacation. You can also have that five-star hotel design in your home.

I must thank the staff at the Ritz-Carlton Naples Florida resort. The staff at the resort was so friendly, polite, professional, and always had a smile. They treated us like we were the most important guest that was staying at the hotel.
Special thanks to Danielle Travis the public relations manager at the resort for allowing me access to fresh room for my photos.

Romance In The Bedroom

Day of love is just around the corner and I can give some ideas on how to have a romantic bedroom decor in your love nest. These simple steps will add a romantic setting.

Lighting is one of the most important aspects with a soft glow that makes it soothing and romantic. Don’t use harsh lighting from an overhead lighting fixture. Try a table lamp or even a chandelier these are the perfect ambiance lighting.

The soft color palette in blues, creams, pastels, grays, and for a fun dramatic style why not all black room. Avoid strong, bold colors like red, orange, and chartreuse green. Even though red is always connected to love, it’s too strong for a romantic bedroom.

The center of the bedroom is the bed. A cozy bed is a wonderful way to start with. Here’s are a few bed styles that say, love, upholstered headboard, poster bed with a canopy with sheer fabric, and sleigh bed give you a feeling of being embraced with headboard and foot board. These beds will speak the language of love.

What makes the bed even a more special love nest is the bedding. Envelope yourself in a beautiful comforter in a soft fabric. When it comes to the bedding its all about the layers that make a pretty bed. Just don’t through a comforter on the bed but add pillows as part of the layers. Try using pillows of different fabrics, laces, tassels, and some inspirational quotes on the pillows of love.

To add romance to a room with another layer is adding wallpaper/wall covering. Wallpaper can be so romantic with color and patterns. Wall covering is when using fabric to cover the walls and it can shut out the outside world as a sound bare when use padding between the wall and fabric. Wall covering gives a sense of serenity.

Window treatments are just as important to the finished room if you use soft fabric for shades or long panels. They have a function to control the lighting in the room and sound. Besides having a function, they can also be romantic just like the pillows with their fabrics, laces, and trim.

The bedroom is the first place you start your day and it’s the last place you end your day. So why not make a bedroom give add serenity and love to a romantic setting. If you are married or in a relationship want to draw someone in your life make the bedroom your place for love.  Set the mood with these simple and easy tips.

A few years ago, I was working at a furniture store as in-house interior designer.

Two ladies came in the store they were siblings. “They were just looking.” After having a casual conversation, I gathered some more information as to what they were looking for.

One sister proceeds to tell me, “My sister she needs Design Intervention” of course a laugh came afterwards.  She purchased a house on the lake three years ago, and never did anything she only has what was left at the house and that includes two green leather swivel chairs, kitchen table, couple wooden of barstools, and a white bed

My new client Sue “I just don’t know where to start? “I go there to get away on the weekends and I have friends come over and watch movies and just hang out at the lake during the summer, I love the place but just don’t know where to start” one of the first questions I asked was “so you have the 2 green chairs and where does the other people sit?” The sister ” we sit on the floor and drink wine and we are too old for that. ” First clue? More seating is needed.

After getting more understanding of the “Just looking answer and really knowing that she needed to make her a weekend retreat her sanctuary with new furnishings, paint, window treatments, and make it comfortable just not for her but for her guests.

We began our design intervention with the in-home evaluation of her lake house.

I love to have my clients answers a few questions so I understand what they like and dislike, what their budget is, and what style they would like to go with. Sometimes my clients really don’t know what to answer because they may not have a style or a budget in mind because, they don’t know what prices are or they might not know what would work in their space.

After a couple of weeks, I had my clients come back in to the store. I did a presentation with her. I called the project the Casual Elegance Lake House. This included a floor plan, fabric samples, window treatments, wallpaper, and floor covering.

Like many of my clients they don’t do a whole house at one time. We choose to do a room at a time. This took approximately about six months to complete, once it was finished my client was thrilled she finally felt her lake house was her sanctuary. Elegant, but casual enough to sit, relax, or hang out at the lake and enjoy movies with her friends.

Top Trend for 2017

It’s a throwback to the 90’s. Yes we’re Ice Ice Baby again. In fashion and home decor. How, you ask? If you look at what’s happening in fashion today, it’s reflecting on interiors.

1, Velvet

The velvet baby doll dress and chokers that we wore in the 90’s are now in fashion again and anything velvet in home decor. You see this with upholstery furniture, beautiful throw pillows, and lush window treatments.

2, Jewel tones

Jewel tones are rich in color and have depth.

When I first started my career in design, I was working at Ethan Allen as a designer in the mid 90’s Ethan Allen had a collection of fabrics that were in jewel tones. The fabrics had a repeating color of Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Rubies, and gold. They had coordinating patterns a damask, stripes, and plaid. This was a sophisticated bold aesthetics.

Now these colors are being seen in residential designs. By way of vibrant wall colors and rich velvet upholstery.

I feel you’ll see this trend developing more in late 2017 or in 2018.

3, Gold

The final trend gold or back in the days we used to call it brass. Today’s gold is more modern and not the ornate brass from the 90’s.

What these three trends have in common are modern, sophisticated, and luxury. They display a more mature style.

Re-purpose With Reclaimed Lumber

Bar Barn Doors

Bar Barn Doors

A few years ago, I designed furniture and kitchen cabinetry from reclaimed barn wood for a local company.  It has become very poplar to use reclaimed lumber for home décor and furniture.  This is a one-of-kind design because each piece of lumber has its own fingerprint with grain and colors.

The use of reclaimed lumber in residential or commercial spaces is aesthetically pleasing to add dimension, warmth, and texture. You can add a little bit of history to your space from a 100 year old piece of timber that is a hand hewn beam for your next fireplace mantel.

Some of the characteristics of reclaimed lumber are splitting, cracking, bowing, and expanding and contracting. Older timber from barns or old building materials from 75-100 years ago are strong because they have age without today pollutions.

Cocktail Table

Cocktail Table

When working with reclaim lumber you want to make sure that the following steps are taken.

  • Fully clean the wood of debris (mold, dirt, and  poop from barnwood) yes you can find 50year old poo on barnwood and make sure you clean in a well ventilated area.
  • Sand it well so you won’t get slivers. A wire brush or a plainer works well.
  • Make sure you seal the wood for furniture and cabinets because the wood is very porous. Use a water base polyurethane sealer. Wood oil is also a good option too.

For your next design project think about using some reclaimed lumber wood to clad a wall or design a custom pieces of furniture.

Tips for pet friendly products for your home.

Being a mother of 2 fur babies, a chocolate Labrador name Snickers and a beautiful black cat name Sammy, I have learned how to select interior products that are resistance against pets and daily use.

Flooring: Carpet or hard surface has positive and negative uses for pet owner’s.
Carpet; Positive is soft on your feet, provides warmth and is inexpensive to install. The negatives, they are hair collectors, pet stains and odors are easily noticeable. Use of a good vacuum cleaner and a shampoo carpet deep cleaner will help prolong the carpet wear and tear.

Hardwood floors positive, easy to clean pet hair and dust. They add value to your home. Negative; wood flooring will show scratches from pet claws and pet urine will leave dark spots. Solution to restore wood flooring is striping the floor surface and refinishing them. Urine stains maybe visible after refinishing the floors. Another option is laminate wood flooring a durable and a cost-effective alternative with a resin top cover.

Bamboo is a new alternative because it is the hardest of the hardwood flooring options this makes for a good pet friendly choice. Pet stains and scratches still occur but will not be as noticeable.

Tile flooring; Positive is easy to care for pet owners because it does not scratch easily and pet stains will most likely not stain the tile. Negatives are tile can chip or crack and grout can discolor so make sure a good grout sealer is used to block staining.

There is new pet friendly carpet available on the market so when shopping for flooring asks for these products.

Upholstery seating, as we would like are pets not to jump up on the furniture, they are going to still do it. Microfiber fabric is stain resistance. The material is the tightest weave fabric and has the most thread count, this makes for a durable fabric. Microfibers have improved in the past few years with colors, patterns, and texture. Fabric seating will stain, holds pet odors, and tears. You can only use Febreze for so long.

I have found leather to be the best for material for seating. Positives are it is hair resistance, and easy to clean off muddy paw prints and it does not hold pet smells. Negatives are claws can scratch and over years the leather softens up, and will break down and tears easily. When purchasing a leather sofa make sure it is protective leather which is treated leather and is more scratch resistance.

Most clients buy the basic pieces for their living rooms that contain a sofa, loveseat, chair, end tables, and cocktail tables.  The walls are accessorized with art works, one behind the sofa, two matching lamps, and a rug. This is all fine and work well for most people, but why not add to that or just changes the look by doubling up on the accessories by purchasing two of everything.

You will be surprised by just changing out the accessories can give your space a completely new look. You only have to change the room twice a year for the two seasons spring, summer and fall, winter. By just changing your accessories twice a year will give the space a fresh clean look and give the allusion that you purchased a whole new living room or bedroom set.

Your friends and family will wonder how you can afford to purchase a new living room.  First, start with the basic pieces I mentioned earlier. A sofa with clean lines and with in of the scale with space. Then a couple of chairs if the spaces can fit two chairs this gives balance to the design. If the spaces are small and only has room for one lounge chair then a small dining chair will work out nicely for extra seating and you can paint it or change the seat cushion fabric to give a new look.

Now for the accessories, buy two of everything, selecting an item that comes in different colors. For example select one in brown, the other in light green. The pattern can be different also.

Make sure the rug is to scale for the spaces. Then select a rug that you love. Your second choice should be in different colors. Just remember spring and fall colors in your selection.

Lamps do not have to be matching. Shades don’t have to be white, by adding fabric or trim to a shade can give a new look to a lamp, try even a black shade is always a sophisticated style.  For a spring look in a lamp, a clear glass lamp gives fresh clean look along with a white ceramic lamp. Any dark metal finishes or a dark ceramic lamp fits in for the fall colors.

100_0908100_0905

Artwork does not to have to be a typical large painting over the sofa that you keep up all year. Select two that will fit over sofa in the spring and then switch out in the fall  The artwork or wall art can be a grouping of mirrors, drawings, and floating shelves with small nick knacks displayed on them. If you are afraid of nail holes use hooks that have tape on the back they can be easily remove with out damage your walls. (3M Command Adhesive Hooks)

Always purchase two sets of pillows or better yet why not pick up a one of a kind pillow and add it to the grouping of pillows. Again think about the colors light for spring and dark for fall.

Keep your eyes open for any specials on accessories and always have a tape measure handy as to make sure items will fit. Take a picture of your space with your phone to keep as for references.

When it comes to design it always about the layers, First your basic and then the fillers (accessories). This is what set the mood for the spaces with a scent of balance, scale, texture, and volume.
